Disperse dye is originally developed for the dyeing of cellulose acetate, which is substantially water insoluble. However, in the presence of dispersing agent, it can be finely ground and then sold as a paste or spray dried followed by a powder. Now, disperse dye can also be applied to dye nylon, triacetate, polyester and acrylic fibers.
Disperse dye has low solubility in water, but they can interact with polyester chains by forming dispersed particles. With the extremely fine particle size giving a large surface area, it can help dissolution to allow uptake by the fiber. Also, due to the dyeing rate, disperse dye can be significantly influenced by the selection of dispersing agent used during the grinding.
Generally, disperse dye needs the dyeing temperature of 130℃ and a pressurized dye bath. At this temperature, its thermal agitation may cause the structure of polymer to become looser and less crystalline, opening gaps for the dye molecules to enter. The interaction between dye and polymer is thought to be Vander Waals force and dipole forces.
